Is this sofa well made and will it last?

Sitting down to hear a crunch beneath you as the sofa frame collapses is kind of annoying and likely to ruin your evening. A solid, well-built frame will last for years and years (and years). But how can you tell what’s inside a sofa? Try to lift it from one side. A solid sofa will feel solid. Lightweight sofas are, well, lightweight.

Other marks of good quality are:

over-locked seams inside the cushions
pattern-matched fabrics
well fitting loose covers – not too loose, not too tight. (Too loose will look scruffy, too tight puts undue pressure on the seams, particularly if the fabric shrinks slightly when cleaned).

Is this fabric hard wearing?

If you want a guide to how durable a fabric is ask for its ‘Rub Test’ result. Between 25,000 and 30,000 rubs is a good average for general domestic use. And many modern fabrics have high rub tests in excess of 50,000.
