“I’m dreaming of a brown leather sofa”
Leathers, like fabrics, vary enormously.
To make the leather covering for the sofa, a thick leather hide is sliced into thinner pieces. The top ‘slice’ is the best. Full or semi 'aniline' leathers come from this top slice and are of the highest quality, with natural colourings. Compared to other leathers they are more porous, and their character develops and improves with age. They benefit from a little loving maintenance and will continue to look fabulous through the years.
The subsequent slices from the hide are suede. Sometimes this is painted and imprinted with a grain, to mimic the top slice. The resulting surface is ‘wipe clean’ and does not age in the same way.
